FEBRUARY NEWS ROUND-UP

by JA Conde

Okay, I’m officially back. Since there were a few news headlines that have been circulating around the newspapers this month. Here’s a brief recap of all the headlines we have heard for the past few days.

NATIONAL
Angelo Reyes, an asset of Arroyo Administration, has died of apparent suicide. He had done this in front of his parent’s wake, as he had shot himself in the chest using his left hand. His remains had been cremated a few days ago at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig.

SPORTS – NBA

Ray Allen has broken the 3-pt. record of Reggie Miller, in terms of all-time number of three-pointers. According to Basketball-Reference.com, Miller has 2,560 threes during the entire career, while Allen has five more. He duplicated the record last February 10 vs. L.A. Lakers.

Coach Jerry Sloan of the Utah Jazz has resigned as their head coach. After 22 years, the longest-tenured coach in professional sports had ended his everyday routine—–to coach players. One source said that it was because of Deron Williams, whose tension grew with Sloan for the past five-and-a-half years. Jazz great Karl Malone was vocally upset about the news.

SPORTS – PBA

The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters have defeated the San Miguel Beermen during the 2010-2011 PBA Philippine Cup last February 2. The final score was 95-82. The Finals MVPs of the series were Jason Castro and Jimmy Alapag. The Texters’ third title is the third for the team (Coincidentally, all the titles of the Tropang Texters were Philippine Cup titles. And those happened thrice—-2003, 2008-09, 2010-11) and is “the second grandslam” of business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan. The first grandslam happened in 2008. This is also a PBA record, for Coach Chot Reyes, as he earned his mark as the first PBA coach to win 2 titles in three squads. The first two teams were Purefoods (1993 All-Filipino and 1994 Commissioner’s Cup) and Coca-Cola (2002 All-Filipino Cup and 2003 Reinforced Conference). Congrats and cheers to the Texters!

SMB’s loss also marked the final game of Olsen Racela, whose number was retired by the Beermen during the third game of the final series. After the sixth game, he hung up his sneakers and jerseys as an end of an era happened at the Big Dome.

Speaking of the Final series, the PBA and Solar TV have agreed to air the PBA games on Studio 23. This must be an ironic dream, that have happened today. We might remember ABS-CBN bidding for the PBA coverage and eventually losing to Solar. Apparently, games will still  be replayed on Basketball TV. Aside from the PBA rights, the ABS-CBN Sports have also sealed their rights to air the NBA games. The 60th NBA All-Star Game this Monday will serve as a debut telecast of “the NBA on Studio 23” with Boom Gonzales and TJ Manotoc manning the commentary desk.

And lastly, the Chua franchise, the Barako Bull Energy Boosters have taken a leave of absence in the PBA after taking participation in the league eleven years ago. In the meantime, the Smart Gilas-Philippines, the Philippine team takes over the Barako Bull franchise. Most of their holdovers were taken by other teams, most notably Marlou Aquino of Meralco.

SPORTS – BOXING

Ooh, have you noticed something lately about Manny Pacquiao? His hair is long! Yes, it is long! Oh yeah, the news referred Cong. Pacquiao’s new style as “the Bieber hairstyle”. I don’t think it looks like Justin Bieber, I mean Bieber’s hair isn’t that long as it is. Maybe I can refer to it as a hairstyle of Joe Jonas, and not Bieber. He even said that he wouldn’t cut his hair since  he wants a new style (Check out 3:50-4:25). And yeah, here’s a poll regarding the topic.

And to wrap up the article, here’s my treat to all of my readers:

(BONUS: I’d like to promote my sneaker website, KIXNATION. Better than ever, now on Facebook and Twitter.)

PINOY LEFTIES: AN ANALYSIS

Okay. I admit I am a southpaw, or more commonly known as left-handed. And to tell you, I’m very proud of it! Being a lefty may be different, but in  a way, we lefties are unique. A belief says that a southpaw is usually smart and I can attest to that. That doesn’t necessarily mean I am that smart, but it’s somewhat general. Alright, let me give you a brief list about a lefty.

Being lefty does literally mean a person gets something, or writes something with left hand. Also, it is being used in sports, but some southpaw athletes aren’t really that southpaw. And one more thing, the day for the lefties, also known as National Lefthanders Day is held at August 13. And most lefties celebrate it with grace and pride.

Today, let me tell you something about a lefty and Juan Dela Cruz. Not really a story, but a brief analysis. Being a lefty in the Philippines is rare, and only 500,000 people are lefties, almost half of our population. Today, here’s my list of the lefties who are full-blooded Filipinos:

1. DJ Jeffrey Espiritu a.k.a Mr Fu

2. Pops Fernandez

3. Joseph Estrada

4. Edu Manzano and Vilma Santos

5. Kristine Hermosa

6. Erwin Tulfo

7. Che-che Lazaro

More to come!

Here’s the complete list just in case.

By the way, just a footnote, please write a comment below this article about some Pinoy left-handed people you know that I didn’t mention in this article. Thanks! -/pepman

MAJOR MAJOR HEADLINES! MISS MEXICO WINS MISS UNIVERSE!

Hay, finally, after a week, breaking promises sucks!

Jimena Navarrete of Mexico won the 2010 Miss Universe crown last Monday night (Tuesday morning in the Philippines) at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. She defeated (in proper order): Jamaica, Ukraine, Australia, and the Philippines (with our very own Maria Venus Raj). This is Mexico’s first victory in 19 years. The last one was in 1991 when Lupita Jones brought the crown.

Meanwhile, instead of Miss Mexico making an impact in the pageant, our very own Venus Raj was the center of the attention, bshe was the crowd drawer during the said pageant and is the biggest favorite of the pageant, making her #1 in web surveys, but one answer turned off all the expectations (The guy who asked Ms. Raj is actor William Baldwin):

BALDWIN: “What is the worst mistake you’ve ever done?”

RAJ: “You know what, sir, in my 22 years of existence, I can say that there’s nothing major, major, I mean, problem that I’ve done in my life because I’m very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So, thank you so much that I’m here. Thank you, thank you so much!”

And the phrase “major, major” became popular among the youth as the phrase, as some predicted, would even defeat Jejemon, a word popularized last May, as the word of the year.

Even her answer was wrong, she bagged the 4th runner up. as it is the highest place of the Philippines in 10 years. The last highest place of Philippines in MU was in 1999. when beauty queen turned host Miriam Quiambao won the 2nd runner up.

BONUS: Here’s a video that became a major, major hit in 1 week. With over two million views, this video is about four guys expressing their feelings about Venus Raj. Here are designer Veejay Floresca and Martin Bautista, along with traveller Lex Librea and real estate agent Aleq Africa to show you what I really meant:

More headlines to come. In just a short while, we’ll feature Nonoy Baclao, Allan Caidic, and Rolando Menoza. So sit back and relax.

YEAR 2

ON COURT, OFF COURT (YEAR 2.0) by JA Conde

Time passes by, for real. It’s time to go farther. After two years, my doubters proved me wrong, yes I had rough start, but I made a point to be updated with each and everyone of you by improving my writing skills and giving you the latest news yet. How far I’ve gone!

It all started one night in 28th of August 2008, when I registered an account here and so the rest is history. Prior to this, I had a Blogspot account which was a failure, until I thought of using this. My blog here was first titled Inside the Court, but fears of a lawsuit forced me to change title in late December the same year and it is still used up to this day. At first, I failed to get the attention of the readers, but when I made an entry on current DLSU assistant coach Jack Santiago and Basketball commentator Mico Halili, my blog started to get immense popularity among students, bloggers, and PExers (whom I’ll give a credit to my success). And throughout the two years, I also had ups and downs after my success with my entry on Jack Santiago.

Generally, I sometimes fail to give my readers an update yet I still did my best by exploring different ways to catch the attention of the readers. And  one more thing that I failed in writing is not writing it a few hours after, instead, I’ll write it a few days. I admit I’m not really a sportswriter, but an aspirant, I’m also sometimes busy, getting busy with other works like computer works and school , so that’s why I usually write some articles in a few days or in a few times, a few weeks. Now, throughout my two years here, many competitors began creating a blog (even mine was a moderate success) and they’ve succeeded me, maybe because they’re older and more obsessed on blogging than me. I guess they just got their right time to be popular. I admit I sometimes feel bad when a blog succeeds my blog, e.g a blog of this sportswriter succeeded me, that made me feel bad. Alright, I’ll do my best, for real, in this year.

Don’t get me wrong, even if this wasn’t really successful, this blog is like my journal, and I always get better as times evolves. I would like to thank to the people who’ve made my blog successful, my loyal readers, and my classmate for giving me an opportunity to join here (She had her WordPress account a few months prior to me). Hindi naman kita ginagaya eh, wala lang curious lang ako. Happy Anniversary to me!

More updates to come! Miss Universe and Rolando Mendoza, up next!

REDFORD WHITE, 54

Ace comedian Redford White has succumbed to brain tumor yesterday at his Fairview home in Quezon City. He was already sick since early February. Known for his roles in shows such as Iskul Bukol, Super Laff-In, and Buddy en Sol, he has also invaded the movie scene by making successful tandems with Carding Castro (+), Babalu (+), and Eric Quizon. He was last seen in ABS-CBN’s Palos two years ago.

Veteran comedian Palito has succumbed to a lung conditon this morning at the Philippine General Hospital.

Palito, or Reynaldo Hipolito in real life is known for his small frame and his various movies in the 80s and 90s. He is also one of the few sidekicks of comedy king, Dolphy.

Lately, he suffered an unquestionable illness as he was sent to a hospital in Imus, Cavite. In order to solve the problems, Palito was then moved to the Phil. General Hospital as his son requested help for his weak father via a message in Facebook, a social networking site:

“Legendary actor/musician, Palito, is currently confined in a hospital in Imus, Cavite and he badly needs financial assistance in order to fully diagnose his condition. He is in need of a CT Scan ASAP. Please contact us at 09163451874 if you wish to donate. Any amount will help him greatly. Please share this post with your contacts. Thank you so much.”

-Mark Escueta of Rivermaya

And Palito will be always remembered by everybody.
