FEBRUARY NEWS ROUND-UP

by JA Conde

Okay, I’m officially back. Since there were a few news headlines that have been circulating around the newspapers this month. Here’s a brief recap of all the headlines we have heard for the past few days.

NATIONAL
Angelo Reyes, an asset of Arroyo Administration, has died of apparent suicide. He had done this in front of his parent’s wake, as he had shot himself in the chest using his left hand. His remains had been cremated a few days ago at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig.

SPORTS – NBA

Ray Allen has broken the 3-pt. record of Reggie Miller, in terms of all-time number of three-pointers. According to Basketball-Reference.com, Miller has 2,560 threes during the entire career, while Allen has five more. He duplicated the record last February 10 vs. L.A. Lakers.

Coach Jerry Sloan of the Utah Jazz has resigned as their head coach. After 22 years, the longest-tenured coach in professional sports had ended his everyday routine—–to coach players. One source said that it was because of Deron Williams, whose tension grew with Sloan for the past five-and-a-half years. Jazz great Karl Malone was vocally upset about the news.

SPORTS – PBA

The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters have defeated the San Miguel Beermen during the 2010-2011 PBA Philippine Cup last February 2. The final score was 95-82. The Finals MVPs of the series were Jason Castro and Jimmy Alapag. The Texters’ third title is the third for the team (Coincidentally, all the titles of the Tropang Texters were Philippine Cup titles. And those happened thrice—-2003, 2008-09, 2010-11) and is “the second grandslam” of business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan. The first grandslam happened in 2008. This is also a PBA record, for Coach Chot Reyes, as he earned his mark as the first PBA coach to win 2 titles in three squads. The first two teams were Purefoods (1993 All-Filipino and 1994 Commissioner’s Cup) and Coca-Cola (2002 All-Filipino Cup and 2003 Reinforced Conference). Congrats and cheers to the Texters!

SMB’s loss also marked the final game of Olsen Racela, whose number was retired by the Beermen during the third game of the final series. After the sixth game, he hung up his sneakers and jerseys as an end of an era happened at the Big Dome.

Speaking of the Final series, the PBA and Solar TV have agreed to air the PBA games on Studio 23. This must be an ironic dream, that have happened today. We might remember ABS-CBN bidding for the PBA coverage and eventually losing to Solar. Apparently, games will still  be replayed on Basketball TV. Aside from the PBA rights, the ABS-CBN Sports have also sealed their rights to air the NBA games. The 60th NBA All-Star Game this Monday will serve as a debut telecast of “the NBA on Studio 23” with Boom Gonzales and TJ Manotoc manning the commentary desk.

And lastly, the Chua franchise, the Barako Bull Energy Boosters have taken a leave of absence in the PBA after taking participation in the league eleven years ago. In the meantime, the Smart Gilas-Philippines, the Philippine team takes over the Barako Bull franchise. Most of their holdovers were taken by other teams, most notably Marlou Aquino of Meralco.

SPORTS – BOXING

Ooh, have you noticed something lately about Manny Pacquiao? His hair is long! Yes, it is long! Oh yeah, the news referred Cong. Pacquiao’s new style as “the Bieber hairstyle”. I don’t think it looks like Justin Bieber, I mean Bieber’s hair isn’t that long as it is. Maybe I can refer to it as a hairstyle of Joe Jonas, and not Bieber. He even said that he wouldn’t cut his hair since  he wants a new style (Check out 3:50-4:25). And yeah, here’s a poll regarding the topic.

And to wrap up the article, here’s my treat to all of my readers:

This is my tribute to Sunday’s best noontime show, ASAP.

ON COURT, OFF COURT by JA Conde

February 5, 1995 was the date Sunday noontime television changed forever. 4 hosts from different backgrounds debuted the show with a bang, as they never knew, they would have succeeded the rival show.

Talk about the King and Queen of Concerts, the Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyala, and the 1993 Miss Universe in one show? Possible, with their perfect on-scene chemistry, it made the show unstoppable in any aspect——ratings games, etc.

Now on their 15th anniversary, this show continues to show world-class talents and futuristic numbers as this show has literally evolved. Today in my article, I am gong to tell you how this show was carefully planned and their journey from an upstart show to Sunday’s best noontime show——–ASAP.

January 21, 1995 was a sad day for the Lopezes (the owners of ABS-CBN), as they lost one of their biggest programs to rival network GMA, as Eat Bulaga! along with Okay Ka Fairy Ko! moved to that said station due to the fact that ABS-CBN wanted to buy the TAPE programs the year before. Problem is, ABS-CBN had to think on how to resolve this, and they thought of putting the then-Sunday noontime show Sa Linggo nAPO Sila to Weekdays, as the Sunday noontime show became vacant.

Johnny Manahan, who was at that time a director for some ABS-CBN shows and one of the top executives of the Star Circle (now Star Magic) thought of a high-class noontime show, ala Student Canteen, and that’s how A.S.A.P or All-Star Afternoon Party was started.

Debuted on February 5, 1995, the show was aired live inside the Delta Theater, ABS’ answer to GMA’s Broadway Centrum, with the birthday of Martin Nievera being celebrated as his guests sang most of his signature songs. What a way to start the show! And little by little, they began to defeat rival GMA Supershow in the ratings (FACT: GMA Supershow was the undisputed #1 Sunday noontime show from 1978 to 1995, even though there were other rivals like IBC/ABS’ Sa Linggo nAPO Sila and RPN’s Spin-A-Win and Family Kwarta o Kahon) which led to the show’s demise giving way to Sobrang Okay, Pare! (which is now known as SOP, which will end in late February). The show even had many innovative things such as segments such as Dayanara Torres’ Sayaw Nara and even a theme song and the rest is history.

The succeeding years became challenging for them, as they underwent several hosting changes, studios, titles, and yes—even controversies. One major controversy of the show was from an episode from  1998 wherein Martin Nievera, one of the show’s hosts, suddenly cried on national television as he declared that his wife, Pops, have martial problems, as he tearfully resigned from the sow. Hunk actor Richard Gomez replaced him for the mean time.  And the show’s ratings went stronger——-a testament which still happens until today.

And as the 15th anniversary celebration of ASAP continues, ASAP brings to you Jabbawockeez! and 4 Minutes this Sunday.

(FYI, I already know this for a long time, researcher syndrome ‘no?)

ATENEO KOs FEU FOR PCCL TITLE

For three straight years, Ateneo Blue Eagles has been wanting to get back this PCCL title as they recently knocked out the FEU Tamaraws, with the score of 70-74 moments ago at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Ateneo started the game like they’re about to win it, as they even led the game by 16 pts., but FEU bounced back as they even led the game by 3 midway in the final period, but the crucial plays of Jai Reyes and Oping Sumalinog made them return to competitiveness as they proved that they’re the best collegiate team in the Philippines. Apparently, in one part of the game, Reil Cervantes of FEU kicked the ball after recieving a turnover, as he was fouled out of the game after.

This is Ateneo’s third PCCL finals appearance, as they won the 2007 and 2009 crowns respectively, only to lose in 2008 to La Salle led by JV Casio.

And as for the annual awards, here’s the complete list:
Referee of the Year: Gamboa of PBL
Coach of the Year: Norman Black, Ateneo
Mythical 5:
Alderich Ramos and RR Garcia, FEU
Eric Salamat and Jai Reyes, ADMU
and Bambam Gamalinda of SBC

Most Valuable Player: Jai Reyes, ADMU

Congrats ADMU!

THE OBMCI EXPERIENCE

It’s new day shining into our lives, and so as I am. It’s like June to me now, because this would be my first time to enter my future school, the Operation Brotherhood Montessori Corporation, Greenhills Branch. 2 hectic weeks of struggles and happiness, I love studying here!

Haha, it all started when I see a hundred of strangers, then came the CAT people and the flag ceremony (Which happens eveyday.). Hooo hah! That’s how CAT people shout, they’re like cheering, because they train everyday under Mr. Dela Pena or sometimes, Mr. J.M Capistrano. CAT, by the way, is the High School version of the usual Boy Scout and Girl Scout.

Now back to the topic, I went there as a virtually unknown student. Then came introductions, I saw some classmates (We’re actually mix, there are 24 incoming 1st yr. students, 3 2nd yr. students, and a 3rd yr. student, all came from other schools. And some will study in Greenhills -including me- then some from Sta. Ana).

By the way, my first friend is Marlon Mandane, the one who has shaved his hair lately, then came Charles, Roy, the 2 Joshuas, then some girls such as Alyssa and Micah (OT: She called me hamon -Tagalog term for Ham, a food-, funy though 🙂 ).

Then came touring some of the facilities, and yeah, they’re beautiful. And here’s more decent about the school, the students usually shake hands when they greet someone. After those, there are some orientations, lessons and seatworks of the respective subjects. By the way, our subjects include TLE, Math, Language, Cultural Arts, and Leadership Training (The CAT).

Our teachers include Mrs. Ruth Dotimas, Mrs. Ellen Suva, Mrs. Charmaine Apo, and Mr. Capistrano. My favorite here is Mr. Capistrano, he’s strict but funny, ditto with his green jokes.

And yeah, this experience is overwhelming, infact I even admired some girls (I’ll never tell!). Haha, just kidding, it’s really good. Hanggang sa June na lang! Miss you guys!
